
The bay of Cala Mesquida
(Catalan: s´Arenal de sa Mesquida) is located in the northeastern part of the island and belongs to the municipality of Capdepera.
The sand beach, nearly 300 metres long and around 130 metres wide, borders high dunes and pine trees. Due to the almost untouched nature, the fine sand and the clear water, it is considered Cala Mesquida to the most beautiful bays for swimming in Mallorca.
Cala Mesquida – fine sand and crystal-clear water
In 1991, the government of the Balearic island designated the bay as an „area of special interest“. This certainly helped to preserve the bay's natural beauty to this day. Holidaymakers appreciate the beautiful, large sandy beach, which is located amidst an almost natural environment Nevertheless, there is sufficient infrastructure for a comprehensive beach holiday. The beach is monitored by the Red Cross (Cruz Roja) and there is a sun lounger and umbrella rental service. A lifeguard station is located directly on the beach.
For most of the time, the water is crystal clear, making Cala Mesquida ideal for diving or snorkelling. However, this can change depending on wind and weather conditions. On some days, there's a rather strong wind, which causes high waves. Directly behind the gently sloping beach, there's a dune landscape extending about a kilometre inland, surrounded by a pine forest. In combination with the white sandy beach and the crystal-clear water, this creates a picturesque overall scene. The entire bay is situated within a Nature reserve, which is regularly inspected. At the eastern end of the beach there is a small bunker that was used by the military during the Spanish Civil War.
For refreshments, there is a small Snackbar and some restaurants.Showers are available, but there are no changing rooms. Watersports are limited to a minimum, with only pedal boats available for hire. Nudism is officially permitted in the eastern part of the bay. Cala Mesquida has been extremely popular with tourists for many years. Most holidaymakers come from Germany and the UK, and particularly appreciate the easy access and vast sandy area. Most tourists are under 50 and stay in the immediate vicinity in a rented flat or hotel.
Cala Mesquida – Location and Accessibility
Near Cala Mesquida, there are neither highly frequented tourist destinations nor huge cities. On one side, the bay leads directly into a scenic landscape with numerous dunes and pine trees Above. Many large seagulls and some cormorant colonies nest here. The nearest village, Capdepera, is around 7 kilometres from the bay. The next larger town is the small municipality of Artá. This is just under 15 kilometres from the bay. From Palma de Mallorca Airport Holidaymakers find it easiest to reach Cala Mesquida by bus. The journey takes approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes. Tourists wishing to travel by public transport should take bus line L 411 first to Cala Ratjada and then change to bus line L 471. Those who rent a car at the airport should take the MA-15 road and it will take approximately 75 minutes to Cala Mesquida. There is ample parking west of the settlement of the same name.
A tiny settlement with large hotels
The settlement of Cala Mesquida, with only around 40 inhabitants, is located above the bay. The actual number is considerably higher, as numerous tourists stay in several large hotel complexes, especially during the main season. The small village lies on a hill and dates back to the Middle Ages. There are a few shops and restaurants in Cala Mesquida, and even a German butcher. If holidaymakers walk along the coast towards the northwest, they will encounter the well-known Coastal path called „Camí dels Carabiners“.The impressive pigeon cave (Cova des Coloms) is located in the immediate vicinity and can be reached on foot. The nearest harbour is around 9 kilometres away and is located in Cala Rajada. The nearest hospital in Manacor is around 32 kilometres away.
Sporting activities and sights
Cala Mesquida is not only appreciated for its beautiful white sand and clear water. The bay is an extremely popular starting point for Snorkelling and diving trips. Directly on-site, there are several dive schools offering various tours.
During the off-season, the beach is significantly quieter, and combined with the stronger wind, Cala Mesquida is ideal for surfers at this time. Holidaymakers who need a change from their usual beach activities can visit Capdepera and play a round of golf. The 18-hole course is one of the most beautiful golf courses in the Balearic Islands and is first-class in its facilities. The clubhouse houses a great restaurant with delicious food and cold refreshments.
The picturesque village of Artà, despite its great fame, remains quiet and traditional. One of the most popular attractions is the Church „Sanctuary of Sant Salvador“. This dates back to the 14th century and was extensively renovated in the 19th century. Due to its rich history and charming infrastructure, a day trip to Artà is definitely worthwhile.
From Cala Mesquida, holidaymakers can reach two of the most famous cave systems in Mallorca. The Cuevas d’Artà and the Cuevas del Drac are impressive sights. Holidaymakers book a guided tour and descend almost all the way down. Here they can admire the fascinating stalactites and stalagmites up close.
