Mallorca is considered the most versatile of the Balearic Islands. In addition to beaches and the sea, nightlife, luxury and nature, its many different facets also include culture. It is therefore not surprising that the island has a large number of museums of all kinds to offer – be it natural history museums, open-air museums, art museums or archaeological museums. Marcel Remus presents the most worthwhile and beautiful museums in Mallorca.

Andratx Cultural Centre

The Cultural Centre Andratx – short CCA – is one of the major centres of contemporary art on Mallorca and even in Europe. It is located in the west of the island, about a 30-minute drive from Palm removed. Here you will find paintings, sculptures, graphics, photographs and much more from local and international artists. Artists who are native to the Balearic Islands have even been given their own room named CCA Espai. Another special feature is the museum shop, where numerous art books and original artworks by international artists can be purchased. The CCA Andratx was founded in 2001 by Patricia and Jacob Asbaek. 

The open-air grounds of the cultural centre also enjoy the greatest popularity with visitors. A café with a beautiful terrace and a breathtaking view of the mountains invite you for an aromatic coffee or a delicious lunch. The building's large courtyard also regularly hosts concerts and performances. In total, the centre offers an exhibition space of 4,000 m². 

Ca'n Prunera Modernist Museum

The modernist museum Ca’n Prunera is located in the small town Sóller in the northwest of Mallorca in a historic Art Nouveau building. Exhibited are Sculptures and paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries.The artists represented include renowned names such as Picasso, Miró, Fontana, and Matisse. The museum's owner is Pedro Serra, a famous son of the town of Sóller.

Originally, French citrus fruit importers lived in the beautiful building. Much of the original furnishing was preserved, so the museum also retains the Life of an upper-class family in the 20th century presented in Mallorca. Another highlight, too, is the exhibition of old wax figures from the 19th century.

Es Baluard

Es Baluard ist ein Museum für moderne und zeitgenössische Kunst. Es Baluard's is a museum for Modern and contemporary art in the city of Palma. The exhibition is housed in a new building, integrated into old fortifications, and has a total area of 5,000 m². Exhibited are, among other things, sculptures, paintings, and drawings by international artists from the 19th century onwards. The artists include, for example, Picasso, Cezanne, Miró, and Gauguin.

In addition, visitors rave about imposing view over the city of Palma and its Harbour, which the building's terrace offers. The café there has a diverse range of drinks and food.

Son Fornés Archaeological Museum

The Son Fornés Archaeological Museum is a real hidden gem. It is located in Montuïri, about a 30-minute drive east of Palma. It deals with Finds from the neighbouring Talayotic excavation sites. The Talayotic culture was a Balearic culture between the 13th and 2nd centuries BC.

The Talayotic culture is characterised by distinctive tower structures that served the inhabitants as watchtowers. Adjacent to these towers were a multitude of dwellings. These settlements were surrounded by a high defensive wall. All findings from these Talayots so far are exhibited at the Son Fornés Archaeological Museum and are extensively explained – also in German. The age of these finds makes Son Fornés one of the most beautiful museums in Mallorca.

Estate and Museum La Granja

In the west of the island, near Esporles, is the open-air museum La Granja. It introduces visitors to Lifestyle of wealthy landlords in the 19th and 20th centuries closer. The estate owners are the owners of the former country estate. Particularly popular with visitors to this museum is the opportunity to taste foods and drinks from bygone eras. The production of these products is carried out exclusively using natural ingredients. In the estate's workshop, traditional pottery, shoes, perfumes, and much more are also produced. Visitors can purchase any of these items in the estate's farm shop.

Furthermore, the exhibition includes all the stables, cellars, gardens, manor houses and workshops of La Granja. Visitors rave about the very special atmosphere, which originates from the open-air museum. The particular attention to detail in the exhibitions makes La Granja one of the most beautiful and unique museums in Mallorca.
